چکیده
Neutrino astrophysics offers new perspectives on Universe investigation: high energy neutrinos, produced by the most energetic phenomena in our Galaxy and in the Universe, carry complementary (if not exclusive) information about the Cosmos with respect to photons. While the small interaction cross section of neutrinos allows them to come from the core of astrophysical objects, it is also a draw-back, as their detection requires a large target mass. This is why it is convenient to place neutrino telescopes in natural locations, like deep underwater or under-ice sites. In order to supply for such extremely hostile environmental conditions, new frontiers technologies are under development. The aim of this work is to review the motivations for high energy neutrino astrophysics, the physics and the technologies used in underwater/ice Cherenkov experiments, with a special focus on the project of the construction of a km scale detector in the Mediterranean Sea.

Kilometer-scale neutrino detectors such as IceCube are discovery instruments covering nuclear and particle physics, cosmology and astronomy. Examples of their multidisciplinary missions include the search for the particle nature of dark matter and for additional small dimensions of space. In the end, their conceptual design is very much anchored to the observational fact that Nature produces pr...

Several high energy, > 100 GeV, neutrino telescopes are currently operating or under construction. Their main motivation is the extension of the horizon of neutrino astronomy to cosmological scales. We show that general, model independent, arguments imply that ∼ 1 Gton detectors are required to detect cosmic high energy neutrino sources. Predictions of models of some of the leading candidate so...

Detection of Ultra High Energy Neutrinos (UHEN), with energy above 0.1 EeV (10 18 eV) is one of the most exciting challenges of high energy astrophysics and particle physics. In this article we show that the Auger Observatory, built to study ultra high energy cosmic rays, is one of the most sensitive neutrino telescopes that will be available during the next decade. Furthermore, we point out th...

The observation of neutrinos is an experimental challenge due to their weak interactions that makes them elusive particles. Though they are difficult to detect, they are excellent probes to observe the most distant sources and their interior. Until now only MeV extra-terrestrial neutrinos have been observed from the Sun and SN1987A. Nevertheless there is growing activity to build detectors for ...

We calculate the spectral energy distribution (SED) of electromagnetic radiation and the spectrum of high energy neutrinos from BL Lac objects in the context of the Synchrotron Proton Blazar Model. In this model, the high energy hump of the SED is due to accelerated protons, while most of the low energy hump is due to synchrotron radiation by co-accelerated electrons. To accelerate protons to s...
